Police Capt. John Schaeffer declared successful the department’s first sobriety checkpoint in five years Saturday evening and early Sunday morning. The checkpoint for southbound traffic on Pacific Coast Highway close to 1st Street resulted in six DUI arrests, Schaeffer said.

The checkpoint was a “very good effort toward serving as a deterrent and educating the public,” especially in light of a fatality involving a suspected drunk driver on Seal Beach Boulevard Friday evening, Schaeffer said.

Ten vehicles were impounded because of invalid driver’s licenses as well as the DUI arrests.
