The Orange County Transit Authority on Monday approved the use of $5.9 million to stabilize a section of railroad tracks along Oso Creek.

The section was damaged during heavy El Nino rains in February 1998.

The proposed repairs would raise the Oso Creek bottom by 18 feet and stabilize the slope between the creek and the railroad tracks.

The rail line is used for passenger service by Amtrak and Metrolink as well as freight service by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

If approved, the transportation authority hopes to finish the project by Nov. 15.
