High-Speed Bicycle Race Coming to City
Top bicycle racers from across California and Nevada will hit Ventura’s streets on Sunday for a 37-mile race through downtown.
The third annual Ventura Cycling Classic, a high-speed bicycle race, will feature 30- and 50-lap races and nearly $3,000 in prize money.
Sections of downtown’s East Main, Ash, Poli and California streets will be blocked off, and spectators will be able to get close to the action as racers whiz by at speeds of 40 mph and more.
This will be the final event in the Southern California Amateur Series of bicycle races, which have been held all summer in different cities, said Jon Avery, a promoter for the event. Cyclists gained points at each race, and the series winners will be announced at the end of the Ventura races.
Proceeds from racers’ entry fees will benefit the Ventura Youth Employment Service and other youth activities, Avery said.
Between the bicycle races, more than 100 runners are expected for the Ventura County Championships, a three-mile run along the same course.
The master’s cycle race starts at 7:50 a.m., the three-mile run at 9 a.m., the elite women’s cycle race at 9:50 a.m. and a bicycle motocross freestyle show at 11:15 a.m.
