Deadline Is Near for Soka Admission

The deadline to apply to the new Soka University of America campus opening in Aliso Viejo is Jan. 15.

The private, four-year liberal arts college will open to its first 100 freshmen in August. Soka University will offer a bachelor of arts degree in liberal arts, with concentrations in humanities, international studies and social and behavioral sciences. Students will also have to take two years of foreign language and a half-year internship overseas.

The campus will open in the fall with a 5-to-1 student-faculty ratio and will increase to 9-to-1 as the campus grows, university officials said.

Costs for the 2001-2002 academic year will be $16,500 for tuition, $7,500 for room and board, and about $700 for books and fees. On-campus housing is required and financial assistance is available.

Soka University of America, which also has a campus in Calabasas, was founded on the Buddhist principles of peace, human rights and the sanctity of life. The faculty offers a nonsectarian curriculum and the university is open to students of all nationalities and beliefs.

The campus will be dedicated May 3.
