Coach Not Ready to Bask in Victory

The Ducks didn’t want to over-analyze Sunday’s 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, particularly not with an important three-game trip coming up later this week.

“It’s over and done with and we’re focusing on our next game already,” Coach Craig Hartsburg said.

After a practice today at their Anaheim training facility, the Ducks depart for San Jose and a game Tuesday against the Sharks. They play Thursday at Vancouver and Friday at Calgary.

It’s not exactly Murderers’ Row, but the Ducks have little room for error in their final 19 games. Besides, San Jose and Calgary are ahead of the Ducks in the Western Conference standings and Vancouver isn’t far behind.

“We’ve got a big game in San Jose,” Hartsburg said. “We can’t be worried about the past.”

As expected, captain Paul Kariya was sidelined for a third consecutive game because of a bruised right foot. He has not skated in nine days. The club said Feb. 19 he would be out seven to 10 days.

When Hartsburg was asked for an update on Kariya’s injury, he said, “It’s the same as [Saturday].” In other words, Kariya was still limping around with a “moon boot” brace on his foot.

Marty McInnis replaced Kariya, the Ducks’ leading scorer with 35 goals and 69 points, on the top line. McInnis also played a good deal on the penalty-killing unit, which held the Oilers to one shot on goal in three chances with the man advantage.

Right wing Teemu Selanne’s first-period assist on McInnis’ goal was his 400th point as a Duck. . . . Sunday’s victory against Edmonton gave the Ducks a 20-13-1 all-time record against the Oilers, the most victories they have had against any NHL team.
