Athlete School Year FRED WILLIAMS Taft Senior

Events: 100, 200 meters

* The Cal State Northridge-bound Williams won City Section titles in both events and led the region in the 100 with two 10.68 clockings and in the 200 with a 21.12 best that moved him to fourth on the all-time region list. He finished third in the 200 in the state championships after being disqualified for a false start in his qualifying heat of the 100.

Event: 400

* Lovell, who missed the 1999 season after being expelled from Taft for disciplinary reasons, won the City title and placed fifth in the state final. He won the West Valley League championship in a school-record 47.43 to move to seventh on the all-time region list and to first on the state list for the year.

Athlete School Year CHRIS WELLS-ANDERS El Camino Real Junior

Event: 800

* Wells-Anders won the City title and placed second in the state final in a school-record 1:52.28. He ran 1:54.26 or faster six times and had four of the five fastest times in the region in a very strong year for 800 runners.

Athlete School Year JOSH SPIKER Ventura Senior

Events: 1,600, 3,200

* A stress fracture that kept him from running for 4 1/2 months and a supremely fit Ryan Hall of Big Bear prevented the Wisconsin-bound Spiker from defending his state title in the 3,200. But he ran a season best of 9:05.36 to finish second in the state final and clocked a region record of 4:06.3 in the mile to place second in the Golden West Invitational a week later. He won Southern Section Division II titles in the 1,600 and 3,200.

Event: 110 high hurdles

* The Times’ region athlete of the year won state and City titles and was undefeated against Californians. He ran five of the six fastest times in the state this season, topped by two 13.94 clockings that moved him to fourth on the all-time region list.

Athlete School Year JON WILLIAMS Notre Dame Junior

Event: 300 intermediate hurdles

* Williams was one of the fastest high hurdlers in the state for much of the season, but he performed better in the intermediates at the end, winning the Southern Section Division III title--to go with one in the highs--and running a career-best 38.03 to finish fifth in the Southern Section Masters Meet.

CLEVELAND

Events: 400, 1,600 relays

* The Cavaliers won City titles in both events and clocked school records of 41.39 in the 400 relay and 3:13.60 in the 1,600 relay to rank fourth and second, respectively, on the all-time region lists. The foursome of juniors Jason Lovell and Mathew Clark, and seniors James Bethea and Julian Linear placed third in the 400 relay in the state championships and Lovell, Bethea, senior Ontae Chaney and sophomore Randy Bundy finished second in the 1,600 relay.

Event: High jump

* Holmes was one of two athletes in the state to clear 7-0 this season and cleared 6-10 in four meets. He won the Masters Meet at 6-10 and finished second in the state final at the same height.

Athlete School Year SHANE HACKETT Verdugo Hills Senior

Event: Pole vault

* The UCLA-bound Hackett won Verdugo Hills’ first state title, his second consecutive City title and cleared a school record of 16-4 on two occasions to move into a tie for fifth on the all-time region list.

Athlete School Year OLIVER JACKSON Royal Senior

Event: Long jump

* The UCLA-bound Jackson came from behind to win the state title with a fifth-round leap of 24-4 1/4 after finishing second as a junior. His best leap of 24-5 3/4 gave him his third consecutive Ventura County title.

Athlete School Year JAMIL SMITH Palmdale Junior

Event: Triple jump

* Smith notched career bests in each of his last four meets and became Palmdale’s first state champion with a leap of 49-4 1/4. That effort came a day after he bounded a state-leading 49-10 3/4 in qualifying to move to fourth on the all-time region list.

Event: Shotput

* Johnson, who is headed to Florida State on a football scholarship, raised his school record in five meets this season, capped by a 60-11 effort to place fourth in the state final. He won his second consecutive Southern Section Division III title and placed third in the Masters Meet.

Event: Discus

* Svitek, who has signed with Stanford to play football, led the region with a best of 157-6 and won his first Ventura County and Marmonte League titles in the event.

Events: 100, long jump

* The state champion in the 110 high hurdles ran very few 100s in the first two months of the season, but clocked a career-best 10.72 to finish second in the City final. He improved his best to 23-3 1/4 in the long jump and won his second consecutive City title in that event and placed ninth in the state meet for the second consecutive year.

* Lovell couldn’t keep pace with West Valley League rival Williams in this event, but he placed second in the City final, lowered his career best to 21.51 and ran a wind-aided 21.45.

* Goodwin, who signed with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, won his second consecutive Southern Section Division II title and clocked a career-best 47.98 to win the Mt. San Antonio College Relays.

Events: 800, 1,600

* Anderson, who will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, ran 1:54.19 to place ninth in the 800 in the state final after clocking a school-record 1:53.35 in his qualifying heat. He finished second in the 800 in 1:53.99 and second in the 1,600 in a school-record 4:15.21 in the Southern Section Division II finals.

* Kubler finished a disappointing 19th in 9:30.87 in the state final, but ran a school-record 9:16.98 to place fourth in the Masters Meet.

* The Cal State Northridge-bound Jackson ran a school-record 14.10 to finish second in the City championships. He finished seventh in the state final.

Event: 300 intermediate hurdles

* The state champion in the long jump also excelled in this event, winning the Marmonte League title and finishing fourth with a career-best 38.44 in the Southern Section Division II final.

Event: 400 relay

* The Falcon foursome of Jamil Smith, Jerrick Holmes, Terry Furlow and Travis Morse ran a school record of 41.95 to place fifth in the Masters Meet.

Event: 1,600 relay

* Seniors Fred Williams, Anthony Hartzog and Alexis Pitts, and sophomore Tyrone Melton finished a disappointing seventh in 3:28.03 in the City final, but they had a season best of 3:21.0.

* Smith jumped all season with a partially torn patellar tendon in his left knee, but jumped a career-best 6-10 to win the Mt. SAC Relays and Southern Section Division I title and finished third in the Masters Meet and state final.

* Pinson raised his school record to 15-6 against Granada Hills in March and placed second in the City final and seventh in the state meet.

* Porter bounded 47-6 1/2 to place sixth in the state final after jumping a school-record 47-8 1/2 in qualifying.

* Svitek set a school record of 59-3 to win his second consecutive Ventura County title and placed third in the Southern Section Division I final.

* Creadick threw a career-best of 156-11 to win the Pacific View League title and finished third in the Ventura County championships.
