The City Council will continue to review a proposed fee increase for merchant parking permits at its meeting at 7 tonight. Some Main Street store owners plan to present a petition against the proposal.
The council has discussed increasing the yearly fees to park at a lot on nearby 8th Street from $40 to as high as $200. Merchants say the increase would be unaffordable for their employees, who are mostly high school and college students working part time.
Shop owners are also concerned that if the fees are too high, the free parking on Main Street will be used by employees and cause traffic to become congested with customers looking for spaces.
