A one-time aide to former Gov. Edmund G. Brown was one of two men honored recently by California Highway Patrol officials for rescuing Sandra Holbom, an Oxnard woman whose car plunged off a cliff in March and burst into flames.

Lewellyn Werner, 51, retired secretary of the Business, Transportation and Housing agency, and Daniel DeCaussin, 44, both of Oxnard, received certificates during a brief ceremony at the Ventura CHP office.
