Limit on La Guardia Flights Extended to 2002
The Federal Aviation Administration will extend a cap on new flights at La Guardia Airport to head off a fresh surge of delays in the fall.
The limits were set to expire Sept. 15, but they will be extended until Oct. 26, 2002. By that time, aviation officials hope to come up with a permanent solution to reduce congestion at La Guardia.
In January, the FAA capped the number of new flights at 159 and assigned the slots--for landing or taking off--through a lottery. The restrictions cut delays from a peak of more than 10,000 in September to about 3,000 in February.
The FAA is still studying long-term proposals submitted by the Port Authority, such as increasing landing fees, encouraging airlines to use larger planes and auctioning takeoff and landing slots.
