Bear Attacks Force Scout Camp to Close

From Times Wire Reports

Two bear attacks in nine days forced the closure of a Boy Scout camp near Salida, Colo.

A black bear clawed through a tent at the Packard High Adventure Base and attacked a 17-year-old boy Thursday, authorities said. On July 24, Scout leader Vicki Myhnier, 44, was pulled from her tent by a bear that bit her hand and arm.

The 17-year-old’s name was not released because he is a juvenile.

Wildlife officials shot and killed a bear they believed attacked Myhnier but said they were not certain they got the right animal.

The decision to shut down the camp was made by the Chaffee County sheriff’s office and the Division of Wildlife. Camp director John Sallie said the camp closed after the first attack but reopened immediately because authorities said it was safe.
