FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass continue to bite at a fair pace. Anglers are using top-water baits early and late to score on fish 1-3 pounds. Ron Clark of Canyon Country caught and released a 6-pounder from the shore using a nightcrawler. Carlo Nunneri from Granada Hills caught and released a 3.5-pound bass. All other species have been slow this week.

PYRAMID LAKE--Catfish are hitting cut baits and nightcrawlers. Jerry Henderson of North Hollywood caught six catfish that weighed 40 pounds on crawlers. Robert Darling caught an 8-pounder and a 6-pound catfish. Stripers have been hitting too.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Bass have been good early in the mornings, only on surface lures or plastic worms. Excellent trolling for trout. Catfish are good, as well.

LAKE PIRU--Good fishing this week. People are catching their limit of trout by the dam. They have been trolling with needlefish, rapalas and roostertails. Bass are hitting good on the east side of the lake and the cove. Ricci Strange caught a 7-pound bass using a crankbait. Fishing is best in the mornings and late afternoons.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout fishing has been doing well near the dam, up to 35 to 50 feet deep either using nightcrawlers or powerbait. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are biting on nightcrawlers or live crawdad up to 15-25 feet deep.

Orange County

ANAHEIM LAKE--Catfish are plentiful but small, averaging 1-3 pounds and biting on mackerel and marshmallow-mealworm combos.

IRVINE LAKE--Bass are catching really well. Steve and Eric Walker from Cerritos caught limits. Ron Gay from Torrance caught a limit on July 20 and 21. His biggest catch was a 6-pound catfish.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish are biting good in the evening. A lot of bass, crappie and bluegill are being caught during the day. On Sunday, a 50-pound catfish was hooked up but not brought in.

San Bernardino County

BIG BEAR LAKE--Warm weather and water made for good fishing this week. MWD Harvesting program is in progress and the lake is in a state of equilibrium. Water temperatures are nearly constant at all depths. For best results, fish early or late.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--The lake is full of fish this week. They seem to be hungry for anything too: green rainbow, yellow powerbait, nightcrawlers and mealworms. The big fish, a trout weighing 9 pounds, was caught by a Green Valley Lake resident.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Limits of fish are commonplace. They’re catching catfish with inflated nightcrawlers and mackerel. Catfish are stocked twice a week. Night fishing has been excellent.

LAKE PERRIS--Bass have been biting and trout are now biting near the dam. Bluegill are around the island. On July 15, Clark Web caught a 7-pound 2-ounce largemouth bass. On July 16, Jeff Johnson caught a 10-pound 8-ounce largemouth.

LAKE SKINNER--Striper action is starting to pick up. The inlet is producing some nice 2-5 pounders. Bass action is good along with catfish. Jeff McDonald caught a 7-pound bass near ramp 1. Jerry Heavner of San Diego pulled in a 8-pound, 4-ounce catfish near the dam using a mackerel.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout are being caught in the morning and night. During the day, crappie and bullhead are being caught. channel catfish have been lurking near the bottom. LAKE POWAY--No huge catches to report, but catfish action has been fair. Two-thousand pounds of catfish will be stocked on Aug. 8th for the “Midnight Catfish Craze” derby on Aug. 10th. Tickets cost $3, plus $4.50 for a permit. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Hodges launch ramp is closed because of low water level. El Capitan is down to two lanes on the launch ramp. Fishing is good at Miramar and Murray Lakes and excellent at Lower Otay and San Vicente.

Eastern Sierra

BISHOP AREA--At Lake Sabrina, rainbow trout have been active. Also, brook and German trout are being caught. The rainbow trout are being caught up to 4 pounds.

JUNE LAKE LOOP--On July 27 Paul Vlcek of Seattle caught a 5-pound 4-ounce rainbow on Rush Creek using a blue fox number 2. On July 28, Stephen Maruyama from Aptos caught a 7-pound 4-ounce rainbow on Gull Lake. On July 29, Aaron Whitingsol from Victorville caught a 5-pound 4-ounce rainbow trout using a rapala on Rush Creek.

BRIDGEPORT AREA--Lake level is dropping considerably. Most of the southern areas are dry or very low. Anglers are moving north toward the center of the lake and toward the dam area where the water is cooler and deeper. Launching boats is difficult with the low waters in the Bath Tub area.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--125 anglers (5 boats): 141 albacore, 1 lingcod, 120 red rockcod, 239 rockcod, 200 rockfish, 1 halibut.

AVILA BEACH (Patriot Sportfishing)--59 anglers (2 boats): 31 rockcod, 31 red rockcod, 248 bolina, 11 lingcod, 2 cabezon, 78 albacore.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--20 anglers (2 boats): 2 calico bass, 15 whitefish, 33 red snapper, 103 rockfish.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--167 anglers (6 boats): 88 barracuda, 71 calico bass, 1 lingcod, 244 rockfish, 280 sand bass, 7 sole, 76 white seabass, 5 cabezon. (Captain Hook’s)--64 anglers (3 boats): 273 sand bass, 22 calico bass, 12 barracuda, 23 rockfish, 3 cabezon, 1 white seabass, 1 sole.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--84 anglers (4 boats): 55 albacore, 1 bluefin tuna, 477 sand bass, 165 barracuda, 2 halibut. (22nd St. Landing)--169 anglers (7 boats): 43 albacore, 304 calico bass, 168 sand bass, 220 barracuda, 258 sculpin, 5 sheephead, 2 whitefish, 15 rockfish.

LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)--90 anglers (5 boats): 161 barracuda, 2 calico bass, 373 sand bass, 2 halibut, 9 sculpin, 35 albacore, 8 bluefin tuna, 12 mackerel.
