Clinton Book: Profile in Courage Under Ire?

Share

George W. Bush has managed in a few short months to wipe out the gains Bill Clinton made in reducing the deficit. He is getting ready to raid Social Security and Medicare, rape the environment, poison our children with arsenic-laden water and ensure that each and every one of us has an opportunity to get randomly shot by a gun fanatic. So why is it that the only thing Michael Ramirez (cartoon, Aug. 9) can find to get upset about is Clinton’s book deal?

After reading your Aug. 8 editorial on President Clinton, I have come to the conclusion that there are too many people who are jealous of Clinton’s ability to “wow” people and make them feel good.

So what if he’s going to get more than $10 million for his memoirs. Has there been any other president who has been more colorful, more in the news and more talked about than Clinton? I will be right there in line to buy his book, and if I’m lucky, then he’ll sign it for me.

Let’s face it. He took our country from a deficit (which the Bush Sr. legacy left us with), to a magnificent plus factor (which Bush Jr. is now trying to undo), to the Monica Lewinsky debacle (the buzzing still hasn’t quieted down completely), to his seeking office space in New York City. Is it the man or the name?

Clinton did for the American economy what no Republican president ever did. And so I guess we can chalk it up to pure jealousy.

I’m not for censorship, but I believe it’s time for a book burning. With the news of a book to be written by impeached President Clinton, I’m going to have my matches ready. What will he write about, and will it be truthful? When he has signings, will he wag the book in the public’s face and say he’s telling the truth this time? Will Monica write the preface?

I will be interested in how he explains what “is” is. He says he won’t have a ghostwriter. That’s great. At least he won’t have a vast right wing or anyone else to blame if his book doesn’t sell. The public doesn’t need any more of the Clintons.
