Looking for calm on New Year’s Day? Go to Old Sturbridge Village, which will re-create the typical First Day of a New England village in the early 19th century, when people did not take the day off work. Visitors can watch craftsmen shoemaking, coopering and weaving, make fence posts or bind a book. Reserve early for New Year’s brunch at Bullard Tavern.

The 101st Mummers Parade will begin around 7 a.m. Jan. 1 in Philadelphia and runs, unofficially at least, for 14 hours. Four divisions (comics, fancy clubs, string bands and fancy brigades) will strut their way up Market Street. A great viewing spot is near the judges’ stand at City Hall. The only rules: no live animals, no ads and no throwing water on the crowd.
