An 18-month-old boy was gravely injured Monday when he broke away from his father’s grip and was hit by a car in the parking lot of the Mission Viejo Library.

Investigators did not release the boy’s name.

“We’re talking to the driver right now. She is hysterical,” said Steve Doan, a spokesman for Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Doan said the incident happened about 6:15 p.m. when the child ran into the path of a Jeep Grand Cherokee pulling into a parking spot next to the library at 25209 Margarite Parkway in Mission Viejo.
