Schneider Quits as Cal Poly SLO Coach

Jeff Schneider, coach of the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo men’s team since 1995, resigned Wednesday with the Mustangs (5-7) mired in a five-game losing streak.

Schneider, who took over a program that went 1-26 during the 1994-95 season and guided the Mustangs to a 16-13 record his first year, had an overall record of 70-84 at Cal Poly.

Assistant Kevin Bromley will be the interim head coach for the rest of the season.

LSU Coach John Brady was warned again that he will be suspended for at least three games if he again publicly criticizes another team, coach or player.

Brady was reprimanded Tuesday for remarks he made after Alabama beat LSU, 82-73, Saturday in Baton Rouge.

“I’m certainly not apologizing,” Brady told The (Baton Rouge) Advocate’s in Wednesday’s editions.

Brady added that when he received Tuesday’s letter from the SEC he “wadded it up and threw it in the trash.” Wednesday, SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer told Brady that if he continues to discuss the matter in a way that “fails to abide by the spirit” of SEC bylaws that he will receive a suspension of three games.

Oregon State suspended sophomore guard Jimmie Haywood for violating team rules. Coach Ritchie McKay said Haywood will not travel with the team to play No. 1 Stanford today. . . . San Jose State forward Tellys Knight has been thrown off the team because his attitude was “detrimental to the progress of the team,” Coach Steve Barnes said.
