Mitchell Relieved After Signing Contract

Former UCLA receiver Freddie Mitchell signed a five-year deal Thursday with the Philadelphia Eagles, hours before training camp began.

“It’s a big load off my shoulders,” said Mitchell, the No. 25 pick whose deal reportedly is worth more than $5 million. “I was worried because [negotiations] were going so late, and it’s critical for me to be at camp.”

Receivers James Thrash and Todd Pinkston are the projected starters for the Eagles, who released both starters from last season, Charles Johnson and Torrance Small, in the off-season.

“I’m learning a lot from James and Todd, so when it’s time for me to step up I will,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell finished his three-year career at UCLA with 119 receptions for 2,135 yards and 10 touchdowns. He is seventh on the school’s all-time reception list.
