Griffins Claim Upset Victory in Boys’ Tennis

Los Alamitos, ranked second in Orange County, beat defending Division I champion Palos Verdes Peninsula, 11-7, in nonleague boys’ tennis Wednesday at Palos Verdes High.

Kevin McQuaid led the Griffins, winning his No. 1 singles sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2. John Mano, playing No. 2 for the Griffins, also swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.

Peninsula, which also lost last Wednesday to Brentwood, was without Jeff Kazarian and Teige Sullivan, two of their three top players.

With the victory, Los Alamitos (7-2) will most likely gain the top-seeded spot in next month’s playoffs.

In other nonleague matches:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 13, No. 5 Woodbridge 5--Cameron Ball swept, 6-0, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 2 singles and Garret Snyder and Randy Myers swept, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles for host Corona del Mar (10-0).

Santa Ana 9, Santiago 9 (Santa Ana wins on games, 76-74)--No. 3 doubles Cesar Miramontes and Juan Alvarez won, 6-4, against Santiago’s No. 2 doubles to decide the match for Santa Ana (11-1-1).

In nonleague golf:

No. 1 Santa Margarita 391, Villa Park 399--Taylor Wood and Scott Manley were co-medalists, shooting three-over 75 at Strawberry Farms for visiting Santa Margarita (6-0).

Brea Olinda 387, No. 2 Servite 391--Sophomore Chris Heintz was medalist for Brea Olinda (7-1), shooting one-over 72 at Los Coyotes and Western Hills. Heintz’s score included a round of two-under 33 at Western Hills on Wednesday.

No. 9 Woodbridge 191, No. 5 Capistrano Valley 202--Junior David Kendall shot par 36 for the Warriors (9-1) at Rancho San Joaquin. D.J. Reeves earned medalist honors with a 35 for Capistrano Valley (8-2).

La Quinta 457, Westminster 536--Medalist Eduardo Rodriguez shot a 79 for the Aztecs (2-3) at David Baker and Meadowlark, a combined par-67. Westminster is 1-4.

In nonleague softball:

No. 2 Canyon 7, No. 4 Pacifica 0--Erin Slettvet had a double, single and two RBI and Heather Slettvet had a single and two RBI for visiting Canyon (12-3). Lisa Geer and Jessica Runge combined on a three-hitter for the Comanches.

No. 7 Loara 2, Sunny Hills 1 (9)--Mandy Servello and Katie Joosten connected on consecutive doubles in the top of the ninth inning for the game-winning run for visiting Loara (10-1). Joosten improved to 6-0 on the mound with a five-hitter.

Fountain Valley 1-5, Woodbridge 0-2 (first game, 11 innings; second game 6 innings, darkness)--Jackie Brown’s triple in the bottom of the 11th inning of the first game drove in the only run for Fountain Valley (9-5). Jenny Doezie was three for four, while Nicole LaPier (5-0) struck out 13. Candace Alcantara and Christina Skaggs each had two hits in the nightcap for the Barons.

In Century League boys’ swimming:

No. 6 Villa Park 96, No. 10 Canyon 74--Josh Kashuk was a double winner for Villa Park, taking the 50 (22.49) and the 100 freestyles (50.17). Villa Park’s Charlie Fisher recorded a Southern Section Division I qualifying time in the 500 freestyle, winning the event in 4:59.34.

In Century League girls’ swimming:

No. 8 Canyon 103, Villa Park 67--Canyon’s Erin Volcan turned in the county’s fastest time this season in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning the event in 1 minute 7.2 seconds. Volcan, a junior, also won the 100 butterfly in 59.17. Canyon is 4-1, 1-1.

In Garden Grove League boys’ track and field:

La Quinta 77, Bolsa Grande 49--Sophomore distance runner Peter Nguyen captured the 1,600-meter run in a time of 4:30.0, as well as the 3,200 at 10:59.0, for host La Quinta (3-1).

In Garden Grove League girls’ track and field:

La Quinta 77, Bolsa Grande 46--Kim Duong won four events--100- and 200-meter dashes and long jump and triple jump--for host La Quinta (3-1).

In Golden West League boys’ volleyball:

Ocean View 3, Westminster 0--Jason Roth had six kills and Scott Hamelberg added five for the Sea Hawks (5-1, 1-1), who won, 15-0, 15-3, 15-8. Westminster is 0-2 in league.

Saddleback 3, Santa Ana 1--Brett Reid had 18 kills and Kalem Berard eight for host Saddleback (7-2, 1-1), which won, 15-10, 15-12, 13-15, 15-7.

In nonleague volleyball:

No. 4 Capistrano Valley 3, No. 10 San Clemente 0--Chris Hermanas had 15 kills and teammate Nick Vislay added 11 for the host Cougars (5-0, 1-0), who won, 15-5, 15-8, 15-7. Nick Gardner had 15 kills for San Clemente (2-4, 0-1).
