Study Shows Low Pay Affects Child Care
From Times Staff Writers
Pay for staff members at licensed child-care centers is too low to attract and keep well-trained teachers, according to early results of a study released Friday.
Success By 6, an initiative of the Orange County United Way, surveyed 35% of the county’s 651 licensed child-care centers. It found that the average hourly wage for the highest-paid teachers in nonprofit child-development centers is $14. In for-profit centers, the highest median pay is $11 an hour.
