Hawaii’s ukulele virtuoso Herb Ohta will give a rare mainland performance Sunday in downtown Los Angeles. Earlier this year, Ohta, who has recorded more than 75 albums featuring a variety of musical styles, became the first Hawaiian artist ever to be invited to perform at Idaho’s Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, along with such greats as Clark Terry, the Ray Brown Trio, Hank Jones, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Clayton and David “Fathead” Newman.

For the first time this year, Los Angeles County is celebrating Cesar Chavez’s birthday with a schedule of cultural and storytelling activities aimed at educating children about his life and work. The Cesar Chavez photographic exhibit at the Natural History Museum will run through Sunday, and the museum is offering free admission Saturday. El Pueblo de Los Angeles and Olvera Street will host a Cesar Chavez Day Community Festival on Sunday, featuring storytelling, arts and crafts, music and more.

In their set at the Fold, San Diego’s dirge-meisters Black Heart Procession are likely to lift the shroud off of some new material they’ve recorded for their next album, which is planned for release in the fall. As always, expect the unexpected from a band known for constructing its haunting sounds from such ingredients as saws and other unconventional percussion.

DJ Bonebrake, the protean drummer of L.A. punk heroes X, and eclectic jazz guitarist Skip Heller go back several years as collaborators, starting with the “One More Midnight” album and their shows at LunaPark as the Heller-Bonebrake Combo. Now regulars at the Bigfoot Lodge, the five-piece Heller-Bonebrake (with the latter on vibes) mixes things up for the Atwater Village crowd.
