Revived Moreno Valley Wildfire Fought

A stubborn wildfire in Moreno Valley destroyed a mobile home, a moving van and two other small buildings Tuesday and briefly threatened about 50 homes scattered along San Timoteo Canyon Road and Live Oak Canyon Road, authorities said.

More than 600 firefighters, with 30 engines, four helicopters and six air tankers, worked to contain the two-day, 1,400-acre fire, which kicked up again after dying down. The flames were in a steep, remote area near the Riverside-San Bernardino County line, and were 30% contained by evening.

Two firefighters suffered minor injures, and one resident suffered burns and smoke inhalation, said Joanne Evans, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Fire Department.

No mandatory evacuation was ordered, but residents of the Live Oak Canyon area moved horses and livestock from their ranches along the two roads, said Tony Coletta, an emergency services coordinator with the county Fire Department.

The fire was reported about 2 p.m. Monday and originated on Locust Avenue near Redlands Boulevard. After dying down, the blaze reignited Tuesday morning as canyon winds picked up and the weather got hotter and drier.

The blaze quickly spread to Redlands Boulevard and San Timoteo Canyon Road, fire officials said.

Some 400 to 500 residents live in the area, mostly in mobile homes and ranch houses.

The Red Cross set up a temporary evacuation center at Cypress Elementary School in Redlands for those who evacuated. But many residents decided to stay home or go elsewhere.
