4 Men Killed; Deadly Pace Exceeds Last Year’s
Four men were gunned down in 11 hours during the weekend, putting this city on track to surpass last year’s total number of homicides.
So far this year, 64 people have died on Oakland’s streets, compared with 61 as of last July 20.
Investigators don’t think the slayings were related, but the pace of the killings prompted at least one city leader to call for a police department reorganization.
In all of last year, 113 people were killed in Oakland -- a 30% increase over 2001, when the city registered its fourth-lowest homicide total in 30 years, and the first time since 1995 that it surpassed the 100 mark.
