DMX becomes ‘Champ’ of the charts

DMX’s new “Grand Champ” is one of six albums that debuted in the Top 10 on the nation’s pop chart Wednesday, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The veteran rapper’s CD sold 312,000 copies in its first week in the stores, far outdistancing rock group A Perfect Circle, whose “Thirteenth Step” placed No. 2 after selling 231,000 copies in its first week.

In reviewing “Grand Champ” for The Times, Soren Baker wrote that DMX’s “brute force and unyielding emotion rather than his lyrical complexity” make his music compelling.

Others breaking into the Top 10 are soul/hip-hop singer Erykah Badu (No. 3), rockers Thursday (No. 7), rapper Sheek Louch (No. 9) and Southern hip-hopper Bubba Sparxxx (No. 10).

Early indications from retailers suggest that OutKast’s two-disc set, “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,” will be No. 1 next week.
