City Votes to Oppose Parts of Patriot Act
San Ramon will join more than 170 other cities around the country that have registered their opposition to provisions of the U.S. Patriot Act.
After listening to more than an hour of testimony this week, the City Council cast four votes to oppose some parts of the act, with Councilman Dave Hudson dissenting.
The Patriot Act expands the government’s ability to collect information, and was written to aid terrorism investigation and prevention. Congress passed the legislation six weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
Some area residents are fighting to have the act repealed. They said strong emotions and security fears led to the hasty approval and a constitutionally flawed law.
