Sex Offender With AIDS Faces Possible Life Term
A man with AIDS who failed to register with police as a sex offender faces up to life in prison under California’s three-strikes law.
A state appellate court in Sacramento upheld a sentence of 27 years to life in prison for Delbert Meeks, 52, who was convicted of rape in 1975, attempted rape in 1982 and robbery in 1991.
In May 2000, he was arrested for failing to register within five days of changing his address.
In the 2-1 decision issued April 13, dissenting Justice Richard Sims said the sentence was too harsh.
Deputy Atty. Gen. Janet Neeley said Meeks was legally convicted.
