After two days and 32 matches, the National High School All-American tennis tournament came down to a tiebreaker in the deciding set, with host Corona del Mar pulling out its third consecutive championship.

The Sea Kings (11-0), ranked No. 1 by The Times and seeded first in the tournament, defeated Raleigh (N.C.) Broughton, 5-4, at the Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach in a match defined by momentum swings.

Ahead, 7-4 and 40-love in the final singles set, Corona del Mar junior Spencer Reitz lost three consecutive games to Broughton’s Matt Stein, then failed on two match points in the tiebreaker before winning, 8-7 (9-7).

“It’s the best feeling on earth,” Reitz said. “I feel a lot of pride.”

The victory was especially satisfying for Reitz because he and doubles partner Carsten Ball had just lost their match, 8-5, to Broughton’s Will Plyler and Nelson Bunn.

Softball

Brittany Weil and Garden Grove Pacifica defeated Danira Iolamo and Carson, 1-0, in eight innings in the Santa Ana Foothill Roundtable Invitational at Hillview School.

Pacifica (9-2), ranked No. 3 in the Southland -- No. 1 in the preseason -- began the eighth inning with a runner at second base per international tiebreaker rules.

After a two-strike sacrifice bunt by Taylor Froelich, freshman Noelle Micka’s bouncer deflected off Iolamo’s glove to the second baseman, allowing Camille Hundley to score.

No. 14-ranked Carson (11-2) had its chance in the bottom of the eighth, but Leilani Pallen overran third base and slipped while trying to get back on Paulina Nihipali’s bunt single that would have put runners at first and third with none out.

Weil gave up three hits and struck out nine. Iolamo gave up four hits and struck out 10.

Track and Field

Long Beach Wilson has another outstanding performer in the girls’ 300-meter low hurdles.

That was evident in the 62nd Pasadena Games at Pasadena City College when Bruin freshman Ebony Collins won the 300 hurdles in 41.43 seconds, the fastest time in the nation this year.

Collins, the second fastest eighth-grade quarter-miler in the nation last year, set a state freshman record with her performance and moved to ninth on the all-time state performer list.

The national record of 39.98 was set by Lashinda Demus of Wilson in 2001.

Collins, who also finished second in the 100 high hurdles in 14.46 and ran a leg on a Wilson team that won the 400 relay in 46.03, was selected the meet’s outstanding female performer.

Corona de Mar won the Southern Section Relays for the first time in Coach Doug Volding’s 20-year tenure.

Freshman Stephanie Gabert anchored Corona del Mar’s 400 medley and 200 breaststroke relay teams to victory at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 2 in the Southland by The Times, finished with 248 points after winning four of seven events. Villa Park, the defending champion, was second with 178 points.
