A little wine and wild water

Run the Rogue River in classic style this summer on four- and five-day rafting adventures that combine wine tasting and music with rollicking whitewater journeys.

The raft trips down the Rogue pass through the Siskiyou Mountains of southern Oregon, where patches of quiet water alternate with whitewater. Accompanying the group will be musicians, who will perform classical and folk tunes, and winemakers, who will hold tasting parties in the evenings.

“Rapids like Tyee, Wildcat, Slim Pickins, Black Bar Falls and Blossom Bar provide tremendous whitewater adventure,” said river outfitter James Katz. “Add to that the magic of blending classical music and fine wines and cuisine with the sound of the river.”

Trips are scheduled:

* June 5-8, with Baroque music and wine tasting. Adult fare is $775 per person; 17 and younger, $698.

* June 11-15, with classical music and wine tasting. Adult and youth fare is $945 per person.

* Sept. 19-22, with classical music and wine tasting. Adult and youth fare is $795 per person.

* Also, a family camping trip (without music or wine) on the Rogue will be held May 30 through June 2. Adult fare is $695; 17 and younger, $625.

Included in all trips are meals, guide service and transportation to the river from Galice, Ore. (near Grants Pass). Camping gear is not provided. Transportation to Galice is not provided.

Watercolor classes in castle country

Explore bonny Scotland with pen and brush on a weeklong art tour.

The July 5 course is based at Blackcraig Castle in Strathardle, east Perth and Kinross. It will offer morning instruction for beginners and intermediates in pen and ink, and watercolor. Watercolorist Jill Mueller will lead the group.

Cost: $1,395 per person for painters; $1,295 non-painters, double occupancy (single surcharge is $350), including room with shared bath, most meals, a dance at the castle and a night of theater. Air and ground transportation are not included.

A photo session in

Jackson Hole

EXPOSE yourself to some of the nation’s top photo experts on a six-day digital photography seminar at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

The April 25 workshop, called Digital Photography at the Summit, will include shooting in the field, one-on-one and group technical instruction, portfolio reviews and career counseling. It is organized by Rich Clarkson & Associates. Clarkson is former director of photography for National Geographic magazine.

TIBET

Spiritual walk around the mountain

Follow the pilgrims’ path around 22,000-foot Mt. Kailas on a strenuous circumambulation of the mountain that is sacred to Buddhists and Hindus.

The 22-day trek begins May 22 in Chengdu, China, followed by a flight to the 11,000-foot-high Tibetan capital of Lhasa.

Participants will then motor to Gyangze, Xigaze, Sa’gya and Paryang, among other cities, before joining pilgrims on a three-day clockwise spiritual walk around Mt. Kailas. Accommodations will be in small guesthouses and camping.

Mark Stephens, director of the LA Yoga Center, will lead the group in daily meditations and yoga. Porters and yaks will carry gear, so hikers will carry only a daypack. During the trek, participants will be walking about four hours a day. Participants should be in good physical condition. Experience with exercise at high altitudes, although not mandatory, is helpful.

Cost: $5,625 per person, double occupancy (for singles $6,625), including internal flights, accommodations, camping gear, most meals, airport transfers, visas, and tips for guides and drivers. Airfare to Chengdu is not included.
