Schwarzenegger faces the ire of the GOP

Re “Governor Faces Revolt in GOP,” Dec. 7

Republicans are predictably dismayed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s choice of Democrat Susan Kennedy as chief of staff. But Democrats and independents are heartened by his newfound pragmatism. As a charismatic film actor and astute business executive, he might interpret the failure of his ballot initiatives as a gigantic focus group that proved that Republican ultraconservatism does not test well among California voters.

We wonder whether he and his wife, Maria Shriver, have given thought to repudiating his Republican past, declaring himself as a moderate Democrat and seeking reelection as an independent and/or Democrat. Or will he choose to bow out on the basis of personal and family obligations?

Regarding the Republican displeasure with the governor, it’s obvious that Schwarzenegger has violated the cardinal rule of the current-day Republican Party -- he’s open-minded. Lord knows, being open-minded and a Republican at the same time is an unquestionable conflict of interest.
