Maryland Wins ACC Opener
Maryland welcomed No. 6 Boston College to the Atlantic Coast Conference with a slap in the face.
Ekene Ibekwe scored 21 points, Chris McCray had 16, and the 21st-ranked Terrapins ruined the Eagles’ ACC debut with a 73-71 victory Sunday night at College Park, Md.
Craig Smith had 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Sean Marshall scored 15 for the Eagles (6-2), who lost to a top 25 team for the second time in six days. The defeat came on the heels of a loss to No. 14 Michigan State on Tuesday night.
Boston College went five for 15 at the free-throw line, compared to a 19-for-29 performance by the Terrapins (7-2).
The Eagles trailed, 73-68, before Tyrese Rice made a three-point basket with 2.2 seconds left. After Maryland threw the inbounds pass away, Boston College did the same thing. As the final buzzer sounded, several hundred fans stormed the court to celebrate.
Loyola of Chicago 80, Purdue 65 -- Majak Kou scored 19 points, all but one during a four-minute stretch in the second half, to lead the Ramblers (6-1) over the Boilermakers (3-4) at Chicago. The win was Loyola’s first over a Big Ten team since November 1994.
Creighton 70, Nebraska 44 -- Johnny Mathies scored 29 points and the Bluejays (4-2) routed the Cornhuskers (6-2) at Omaha in the annual meeting of the state’s Division I basketball programs.
Georgetown 76, Fairfield 51 -- Brandon Bowman scored 16 points and the Hoyas (4-2) made 12 three-pointers in a win over the Stags (1-6) at Washington.
