SACK CLOTH, once a sign of humility, has been reclaimed as an eco-friendly decorative fabric that seems designed for these lean, green times. Referencing the look of muslin-covered antiques, Dan Marty’s Napoleon 3 chair, based on a French seat circa 1865-1885, is upholstered in vintage Eastern European gunny sacks used for carrying laundry and vegetables. A talent show with some spine
“Everyone knows succulents are great for container gardens,” says Jeff Karsner, president of the Los Angeles Cactus & Succulent Society. “We figure it’s time for the public to advance its plant palette beyond the usual offerings.” This weekend, the organization’s Educational Show and Sale will let water-conscious gardeners vote on the best displays and shop for California natives, variegated agaves and aloes and exotic species, including the Orthophytum gurkenii, shown here, a more drought-tolerant bromeliad prized for its dark coloration and attractive banding. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with a rare plant auction at sunset on Saturday. Luck be a Loewy
Raymond Loewy, the oft-proclaimed father of American industrial design responsible for the Lucky Strike logo, also hit bull’s-eye with this post-World War II pattern, Mosaic, for the German porcelain firm Rosenthal. On Saturday, the New Jersey-based Rago Arts and Auction Center offers a 127-piece service of the strikingly contemporary dinnerware as Lot 119 at its summer Discovery Sale, an everything-must-go auction with no set minimum bids. The Loewy plates are among 800 lots that include Arts and Crafts lighting, Roseville and Weller pottery, and 20th century furniture by Milo Baughman, Paul McCobb and Finn Juhl.
