Pittsburgh upsets Louisville

Sam Young had 21 points and 12 rebounds, and made two free throws with less than a minute left in overtime to help Pittsburgh to a 76-69 upset of No. 13 Louisville in the quarterfinals of the Big East Conference tournament at New York.

The seventh-seeded Panthers (24-9) started the overtime with a 12-2 spurt to put away the second-seeded Cardinals (24-8).

Pittsburgh has knocked Louisville out of three straight conference tournaments.

In other Big East games: Joe Alexander scored a career-high 34 points to lead West Virginia (25-7) to a 78-72 upset over No. 15 Connecticut (24-8). . . . Jessie Sapp scored 23 points and No. 9 Georgetown (26-4) tied a Big East tournament record with 17 three-point baskets in an 82-63 win over Villanova (20-12). . . . Jerel McNeal scored a career-high 28 points and No. 25 Marquette (24-8) held on for an 89-79 victory over No. 14 Notre Dame (24-7).

Southeastern

Mykal Riley made eight three-pointers and scored 26 points to lead Alabama (17-15) to an 80-69 first-round victory at Atlanta over three-time defending SEC champion Florida (21-11) to put the Gators’ NCAA tournament hopes in doubt.

A.J. Ogilvy scored a career-best 27 points and SEC player of the year Shan Foster had 26 to lead Vanderbilt (26-6) to a 93-82 win over Auburn (14-16). . . . Dave Bliss banked in a shot with 0.4 seconds left in overtime, giving Georgia (14-16) a 97-95 victory over Mississippi (21-10) to hurt the Rebels’ NCAA tournament hopes.

Atlantic Coast

Tyrese Rice scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half and Boston College (14-16) ended a six-game losing streak with a 71-68 comeback win over Maryland (18-14) in a first-round game at Charlotte, N.C.

Jason Rich scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half to lead Florida State (19-13) to a 70-60 victory over Wake Forest (17-13). . . . Anthony Morrow scored 18 points and Georgia Tech (15-16) pulled away for a 94-76 victory over Virginia (15-15). . . . James Dews scored 14 points to help fifth-seeded Miami (22-9) to a 63-50 win over North Carolina State (15-16).

Big 12

Richard Roby scored eight of his 32 points in the second overtime and Colorado (12-19) scored a 91-84 win over Baylor (21-10) in a first-round game at Kansas City, Mo., to put a dent in the Bears’ NCAA tournament hopes.

Aleks Maric had 17 points and 13 rebounds and muscled inside to make a key block in the final seconds to lead Nebraska (19-11) to a 61-56 win over Missouri (16-16). . . . Donald Sloan and Dominique Kirk had 12 points each, and Texas A&M; (23-9) grinded out a 60-47 win over Iowa State (14-18), holding the Cyclones to 27% shooting.

Big Ten

Manny Harris scored 19 points and Michigan (10-21) survived a 10-minute scoreless second-half stretch in a 55-47 win over Iowa (13-19) in a first-round game at Indianapolis.

Chester Frazier’s reverse layup with 3.8 seconds left gave Illinois (14-18) a 64-63 win over Penn State (15-16). . . . Lawrence Westbrook scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half to rally Minnesota (19-12) from a 16-point deficit in a 55-52 win over Northwestern (8-22).

Atlantic 10

Josh Duncan scored 16 points and No. 10 Xavier (27-5) limited Dayton (21-10) to five baskets in the last 12 minutes for a 74-65 win in the quarterfinals at Atlantic City, N.J.

Rob Ferguson scored 16 points and led a 16-point first-half run that carried St. Joseph’s (20-11) to a 61-47 victory over Richmond (16-14). . . . Chris Clark scored six straight points and Temple (19-12) scored the last 11 points in an 84-75 victory over La Salle (15-17). . . . Leemire Goldwire made the go-ahead three-pointer to lead Charlotte (20-12) to a 69-65 win over Massachusetts (21-10).

Conference USA

Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 17 points, and No. 2 Memphis (31-1) advanced to the semifinals after a 75-56 rout of Tulane (17-15) at Memphis, Tenn. . . . R.L. Horton scored 18 points to lead Southern Mississippi (19-13) to a 68-62 victory over Central Florida (16-15).
