2 shot, 1 killed on basketball courts

Riverside police are investigating a shooting that left one man dead and another wounded during an altercation at a basketball game Sunday.

At 3:18 p.m., police began receiving calls reporting shots fired on the courts at Central Middle School on Magnolia Avenue.

Officers and medical personnel arrived to find two men who had been shot.

They were taken to a hospital where one was pronounced dead. Their names and the condition of the surviving victim have not been released.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a confrontation broke out during a basketball game. One of the players grabbed a handgun and fired several shots, striking the two victims.

The players scattered, and a few left the area before the police arrived. Others remained and were interviewed by officers and detectives. The suspect also fled.
