The trauma of mental illness
Re “A breakdown next door,” Opinion, Aug. 24
Thank you to the author for sharing her family’s experience with mental illness.
The tragedy for most is the same as it was for us. It wasn’t until we realized that our son could not live in our home that we were able to get any meaningful help for him. But that was not before our loving, artistically gifted son deteriorated to living under a freeway bridge.
The road to effective treatment and possible recovery for schizophrenia is filled with frustration and grief. Even NAMI -- the National Alliance on Mental Illness -- doesn’t have all the answers, but we do have hope in research and the support of others.
