Scripps College, the women’s school in the Claremont Consortium of colleges, on Saturday named Lori Bettison-Varga, the provost at Whitman College, to be its next president. She will start the job July 1, succeeding Frederick Weis, who will have led the 950-student college for two years by that time.

Bettison-Varga, whose mother attended Scripps, is a geologist who earned a bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Barbara and a doctorate from UC Davis. Before her time as an administrator at Whitman in Walla Walla, Wash., she taught at the College of Wooster in Ohio and at Pomona College, Scripps’ neighboring school.

Roxanne M. Wilson, chairwoman of Scripps’ trustees board, said in a statement Saturday that Bettison-Varga “exemplifies the teacher-researcher-scholar and has a passion for the liberal arts and women’s education.”
