Shopping: A day at the beach with Riviera Club

Share

Riviera Club has a vision: to distill Santa Barbara’s refined beachy lifestyle in a menswear collection.

Joe Sadler, 30, Derek Buse, 28, and Greg Ullery, 27, founded Riviera Club in 2008 as a casual sun-drenched daywear line for men. At the time, Buse and Ullery were living in the coastal city, but currently the trio commutes between a studio in Santa Monica and one in Santa Barbara, going “wherever the better surf is,” says Sadler, who is the line’s creative director. (Buse handles sales; Ullery is chief operations officer.)

The trio chose the name Riviera Club because it sounds like a vintage brand. “And Santa Barbara is America’s Riviera,” Sadler says.

Riviera Club’s collection is sewn in Los Angeles from mainly Japanese fabrics. This fall, the designers are introducing outerwear — inspired by “dry” ski clubs of the 1950s and 1960s, where skiers practiced on grass — along with knits, ties, blazers, sport coats, a suit chino and a “West Coast” pea coat, lighter than those worn in colder climates. Next spring, Riviera Club plans to introduce jeans and board shorts.

This season, Riviera Club is offering warm-weather madras plaid button-down shirts ($165), tailored work shirts ($175), Henleys ($80), logo T-shirts ($55) and ribbed cotton sweatshirts ($125) to pair with washed chinos ($149) and gingham shorts ($115). Key items are named after Santa Barbara-area landmarks — the Montecito, Anacapa and Milpas shorts; the Miramar crew; and the Rincon chino.

Riviera Club sells at Ron Herman in Los Angeles and K. Frank on State Street in Santa Barbara.

What’s the best thing about operating a business from a local resort town? “We can lock the door to the office and get out and relax,” Sadler says.
