Fire risk prompts Porsche to recall, urge owners not to drive 911 GT3

Porsche has issued a voluntary recall of its new 911 GT3 sports car and has recommended that owners of the 475-horsepower machine stop driving them immediately due to a possible fire risk.

The automaker announced Thursday that it would be inspecting all 785 of the vehicles from the 2014 model year that have been delivered to customers worldwide. This decision was made “after engine damage occurred in two vehicles in Europe and the vehicles then caught fire,” Porsche said in a statement.

No accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of the fires.

“Internal studies to determine the cause of the engine damage have not been completed yet,” the company said. “Porsche will report on any new findings immediately.”

The GT3 is a race-inspired variant of the 911 lineup and is the fastest and most powerful nonturbo 911 model Porsche makes. It’s powered by a 3.8-liter flat six-cylinder engine that makes 475 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque.

Power flows to the rear wheels via a Porsche’s PDK seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the automaker says the car can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds.

The car starts at around $131,000 before any of Porsche’s pricey options are added.
