Jane Greenwood to receive special Tony Award after 16 nominations

Costume designer Jane Greenwood is the Susan Lucci of the Tony Awards — she has been nominated 16 times but has never won. This year, her five-decade losing streak will officially come to an end.

Tony organizers announced on Tuesday that Greenwood is the recipient of the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.

Greenwood is expected to receive the award at the Tony ceremony on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall. It will be broadcast live on CBS, with a delay for the West Coast.

Past winners of the lifetime achievement award include Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Miller, Uta Hagen, Julie Harris and Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn.

The first of Greenwood’s 16 nominations dates all the way back to 1965. She was most recently nominated in 2009 for a revival of “Waiting for Godot,” with Bill Irwin and Nathan Lane.

She has been nominated for her work on plays and musicals, including Sondheim’s “Passion,” and has dressed such actors as Jason Robards, Ingrid Bergman, Vanessa Redgrave, James Earl Jones, Elaine Stritch, Rosemary Harris, Colleen Dewhurst and Zoe Caldwell.

In 1994, she was nominated twice — for “Passion” and a revival of “She Loves Me.”

Greenwood has taught at the Yale School of Drama since 1976. In addition to her stage work, she has designed costumes for the movies, including “Arthur,” “Wetherby” and two films based on David Mamet plays — “Glengarry Glen Ross” and “Oleanna.”
