Pacific Standard Time, LACMA honored by museum curators

The Assn. of Art Museum Curators handed out its annual awards this week, and among the honorees were Pacific Standard Time -- the recent survey of Southern California art organized by the Getty -- and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
PST received a first-place prize in the category of outstanding catalog based on an exhibition. The award was for the catalog “Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles Art 1945-1980.”
The first-place prize was shared by LACMA, for the exhibition catalog “Gifts of the Sultan: The Arts of Giving at the Islamic Courts.”
LACMA was also a runner-up in the same category for the catalog to the show “Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World.”
The award for outstanding university museum exhibition went to “It Happened at Pomona: Art at the Edge of Los Angeles 1969-1973.” The show was held at the Pomona College Museum of Art and was part of the PST festival.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art received the first-place prize for outstanding thematic exhibition for its show “The Steins Collect: Matisse, Picasso, and the Parisian Avant-Garde.” The Denver Art Museum received an award for its show “”Artist’s Eye, Artist’s Hand: American Indian Art.”
“Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty,” the immensely popular fashion exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, also received an award.
The award for catalog based on a permanent collection went to the Frick Collection in New York for “Fragonard’s Progress of Love.”
