‘True Detective’ leads TCA Awards 2014 nominees

It’s the sort of news that Rust Cohle might celebrate with an unhurried swig of Lone Star beer: “True Detective” picked up four nominations for this years Television Critics Assn. Awards.

The hit HBO anthology series was nominated for program of the year, outstanding achievement in movies, miniseries and specials, and outstanding new program, and Matthew McConaughey was singled out for individual achievement in drama.

Tied with three nominations each are “The Good Wife,” after a full-charge fifth season, “Breaking Bad,” which ended its five-season run last summer, and “The Americans.”

Other nominees familiar to the roster include “Louie,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “The Daily Show” and childhood mainstay “Sesame Street.”

And a crop of newcomers are making their mark: Logo’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Netflix’s critically acclaimed women’s prison dramedy “Orange Is the New Black,” FX’s small-screen adaptation of the Coen brothers’ “Fargo,” and Fox all-stars “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Sleepy Hollow,” as well as ABC Family’s “The Fosters.”

The category with perhaps the most eclectic list of nominees is the Heritage Award -- where “Lost,” “Saturday Night Live,” “South Park,” Star Trek” and “Twin Peaks” will duke it out.

The TCA Awards will be held July 19 in Beverly Hills.
