David Fincher, Cuba’s female filmmakers among weekend highlights

Oscar-nominated director David Fincher (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Social Network”) will have an extended conversation at Film Independent at LACMA’s “An Evening with David Fincher” Thursday at the Loe S. Bing Theater.

The program is to feature the first two episodes of Netflix’s new series “House of Cards,” starring Kevin Spacey as a manipulative House majority whip. Fincher is the executive producer of the 13-part series and directed the first two installments. The evening is sold out, but there will be a stand-by line. https://www.lacma.org

The Cuban Women Filmmakers Showcase visits the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre on Friday evening. The program features documentary, animated and narrative shorts from four preeminent Cuban directors, writers and actors. The films are making their U.S. debut before the program travels to New York and Miami. Directors Marina Ochoa, Gloria Rolando, Milena Almira and Claudia Rojas will discuss their work following the screenings.

Ten-four. The Egyptian is celebrating the 35th anniversary of Sam Peckinpah’s CB radio action comedy “Convoy” on Thursday evening. Kris Kristofferson and Ali MacGraw star in the film, which didn’t past muster with audiences and most critics back in 1978. Also screening, on its 25th anniversary, is the buddy comedy “Midnight Run,” with Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin.

On Saturday, there’s a Jack Nicholson triple bill -- 1969’s “Easy Rider,” for which he received his first Oscar nomination for supporting actor, 1970’s “Five Easy Pieces,” which earned him his first lead actor Oscar, and 1973’s “The Last Detail,” for which he was also nominated.

Has it been 40 years since the release of “The Sting”? The Cinematheque’s Aero is celebrating the anniversary of the Oscar-winning film starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford on Saturday evening. Academy Award-winning screenwriter David S. Ward will be on hand to discuss the making of the caper classic. https://www.americancinematheque.com

Glenn Frankel, author of “The Searchers: The Making of an American Legend,” and film historian/documentarian Nick Redman will talk about the classic 1956 John Ford/John Wayne Western on Saturday afternoon at the Autry. https://www.autry.org

Cinefamily at Silent Movie Theatre is presenting the beautiful new restoration of Michael Powell’s/Emeric Pressburger’s 1943 Technicolor epic “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp,” on Friday and Tuesday. Roger Livesey and Deborah Kerr star.

UCLA Film & Television Archive’s Festival of Preservation continues at the Billy Wilder Theater. Sunday afternoon’s offering is the 1933 comedy classic “International House,” with W.C. Fields, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Bela Lugosi and Rose Marie, who was known then as Baby Rose Marie. She’ll be discussing the film along with Scott MacQueen, head of UCLA’s film preservation, and James Curtis, author of “W.C. Fields: A Biography.” https://www.cinema.ucla.edu

The New Beverly Cinema is presenting a Rian Johnson double bill Sunday and Monday -- 2011’s “Looper” and his first film, 2005’s “Brick,” with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Johnson and possibly some cast members from his films are scheduled to appear at the theater Sunday. https://www.newbevcinema.com
