Single premiere: VUM’s ‘I Will Return’

It’s fitting that the L.A. goth-noise trio VUM named its early single “Laura Palmer” after a “Twin Peaks” reference. The group’s sound -- and particularly vocalist Jennifer Pearl’s contributions -- evokes the doom and paranoia of David Lynch’s soundtracks, while their productions stay minimal and elusive.

It’s the kind of sound that walks the line between style and substance, but on the group’s new single, “I Will Return,” the trio treads it carefully.

The tune is built off the synthesizer drones and trashy drum machines of Suicide, and Pearl’s vocals brood in the song’s corners -- think Nico after she’s just seen a ghost.

But toward the end, the song opens up a bit with some Durutti Column guitars and church organs that suggest this is a band that could go much bigger with a proper recording or soundtracking budget.

After their April 5 date at the Bootleg Bar, someone should give them one -- Lynch, perhaps?
