“The Battle of amfAR” recalls how Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor helped launch America’s first AIDS research foundation. 9 p.m. HBO

What a way to go! The new series “Best Funeral Ever” spotlights a Dallas funeral home that specializes in spectacular send-offs. 10 and 10:30 p.m. TLC


Alabama, Lady Antebellum, Travis Tritt and Dwight Yoakam will be in Nashville, natch, for “CMT Artists of the Year 2013.” 8 p.m. CMT

“What Would You Do?” That is once again the question when this hidden-camera series returns with new episodes. 10 p.m. ABC

Those who like their holiday with a little more humidity can join Shelby “The Swamp Man” Stanga for “A Very Shelby Christmas.” 10 p.m. History


And it’s the more-er the merrier-er when Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson and Jewel perform on “Christmas in Rockefeller Center.” 8 p.m. NBC

“On the Table With Eric Ripert” has the acclaimed chef just chilling in his kitchen with famous foodies like Anthony Bourdain and Mario Batali. 8 and 8:30 p.m. Esquire TV

“Saturday Night Live” is back in prime-time to stuff your stocking with classic Christmas-themed sketches. 9 p.m. NBC

The wide world of sports grows wider still when athletes, experts and others weigh in on the “State of Play” in this new docu-series hosted by Peter Berg. 9 p.m. HBO

The seamier side of 1940s L.A. is on full display in “Mob City,” a new limited series from Frank Darabont. “The Walking Dead’s” Jon Bernthal stars.  9 p.m. TNT
