SUNSET LEAGUE MEET NO. 1

Fountain Valley, the No. 9-ranked team in the Southland by The Times, had six of the top 15 finishers in the meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach that was scored as a series of dual meets. Senior Josh Selley placed first for Fountain Valley, which defeated No. 5 Marina, 24-32. The meet counted toward one third of the league standings.

Lindsay Flacks of North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake rolled to her third runaway victory of the season in the Division I girls’ race of the Kenny Staub Invitational cross-country meet at Crescenta Valley Park in Glendale on Saturday.

Flacks, a senior who was slowed by a groin injury at the end of last year, ran 17 minutes 43 seconds over the three-mile course to defeat sophomore Alma Escobar of Corona by 29 seconds.

Flacks’ time moved her to fifth on the all-time course performer list and came a week after she won the Division IV race of the Stanford Invitational by more than a minute.

Senior Olga Aulet-Leon of Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula surged to a lead early in the Division I race, but trailed first-place Flacks by three seconds at the mile mark and eventually finished third in 18:41.

Canyon Country Canyon, the No. 3-ranked girls’ team in the Southland by The Times, defeated No. 9 Peninsula, 41-69, to win its second consecutive Division I title in the Staub meet.

Sophomore Jessi Locke placed fourth in 18:41 for Canyon, which had five of the top 12 finishers.

Canyon also won its second consecutive Division I boys’ title with a 46-69 victory over Crescenta Valley.

Senior Jace Getskow and sophomore Adam McDonald placed sixth and seventh for No. 6 Canyon with identical times of 16:19.

Junior Jose Melena of Antelope Valley won the Division I race in 15:41 with senior Chris Chavez of Santa Monica second in 15:51 and senior Ben Kessen of Crescenta Valley third in 15:57.

SUNSET LEAGUE MEET NO. 1

Esperanza, the No. 5-ranked team in the Southland by The Times, had six of the top 11 finishers in the meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach that was scored as a series of dual meets. Junior Joy Wilk paced Esperanza with a second-place time of 18:28 over the three-mile course. Sophomore Crystal Reed of Fountain Valley placed first in 18:21.

Junior Dylan Jaedtke of Royal won the the three-mile race at Corriganville in Simi Valley with a time of 15:47. Jaedtke led Royal (1-0, 1-0 in league), the No. 3-ranked team in the Southland by The Times, to a sweep of the top five places. The gap between Jaedtke and Royal’s No. 5 runner, Ken Reichl, was 44 seconds.

Sisters Devin and Morgan Noe paced Royal to a sweep of the top five places in the league opener at Corriganville in Simi Valley. Devin Noe, a sophomore, clocked 19:25 over the three-mile course with Morgan, a senior, crossing the finish line in 19:32. The gap between Morgan Noe and Royal’s No. 5 runner, Erin Roesinger, was 47 seconds.

Christina Phillips and Katie Grace placed first and second for Marlborough in the meet at Rancho Park. Phillips ran 20:54 over the three-mile course and Grace was timed in 20:58.

Junior Jordan Page of Oak Park came from behind to win the first league meet of the season at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura. Page was in fourth place, 30 yards behind co-leaders George Morris of St. Bonaventure and Ken Brook of Oak Park, at the two-mile mark. But he took the lead ascending final hill on the course with a half-mile left. His 16:45 clocking over the three-mile course gave him a one-second margin of victory over Joaquin Gomez of Carpinteria. Morris finished third in 16:55 and Brook was fourth in 17:04 for Oak Park, the defending state Division IV champion and the No. 10-ranked team in the Southland by The Times.

Senior Katie Gose of La Reina posted her third victory in four races this season with a 19:35 clocking over the hilly three-mile course at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura. Gose had a 25-second margin of victory over senior Lauren Morales of two-time defending state Division IV champion Oak Park. Morales defeated Gose for the Ventura County and Tri-Valley League titles last year, but Gose had a seven-second lead over Morales when she came through the mile mark in 6:34 and her advantage had grown to 12 seconds when she passed two-miles in 13:27. Tatiana Camacho of Oak Park finished third in 20:54 to help the Eagles take five of the top six places.

Ryan Noflin of host Norco (4-0,1-0) was the individual winner, finishing the three-mile course in 17:26. Brad Cox of Norco finished second in 17:33 and Sahil Sharma took third with 17:50 for Norco. Jurupa Valley is 0-1 in league.
