Chemical-fueled fire at warehouse still burning after eight hours
Firefighters continued to battle a stubborn chemical-fueled fire at a Santa Ana warehouse more than eight hours after it was reported Wednesday morning.
The Orange County Fire Authority’s hazardous-material team was on site and expected to determine whether any chemicals, including acetone and alcohol, were still leaking from their containers, said agency spokesman Capt. Steve Concialdi.
“There’s still a lot of debris in there and lots of pockets where the fire is,” Concialdi said. “Firefighters are still trying to get rid of all the hot spots.”
The fire in the 2100 block of South Anne Street was reported at 1:16 a.m. and, at its height, 100 firefighters were fighting the blaze. By 9:30 a.m., 25 firefighters remained on the scene.
Despite some smoke damage, firefighters were able to keep the blaze from damaging adjacent buildings in the area, Concialdi said.
At least 30 55-gallon drums and multiple one-gallon containers of chemicals fueled the fire in the yard of one of the warehouses, Concialdi said. Throughout the morning the flames caused the containers to explode.
There were no injuries and the cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.
