Sweltering, muggy heat to stick around Southern California
Southern California residents in the mountains and inland valleys are in for a miserable day of wet, muggy weather, and conditions aren’t expected to improve much for the Labor Day weekend.
“It’s going to feel warm, there’s no getting around it,” said Carol Smith, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. “Right when we were thinking summer was over.”
Forecasters expect the humidity to gradually decrease over the weekend, but temperatures will remain in the 90s.
“The relief we’ll get is from the drier air and hopefully cooler nights,” Smith said.
Meanwhile, thunderstorms that caused flash flooding in Riverside and San Bernardino counties on Thursday will be hovering over the San Gabriel, San Fernando and Antelope valleys Friday. A similar situation is brewing father south in San Diego, said meteorologist Robert Balfour.
The twin storms are part of a larger wet, warm weather pattern that normally stays south of the border in Mexico, Balfour said. But prevailing winds have pushed the storm north onto shore and pinched it in the middle, sending dramatic downpours north across Los Angeles County and south to San Diego.
More than 1.25 inches of rain fell in Riverside on Thursday, he said.
“It’s just a torrential rain,” Balfour said. “The rain drops are bouncing a foot or two into the air. It’s an intense stream of water.”
