Long Beach police shoot and kill suspected gunman

Long Beach police shot and killed a man who allegedly fired a handgun at a busy intersection, authorities said Sunday.

The details of the officer-involved shooting and what led up to it are under investigation, Sgt. Aaron Eaton said.

At 6 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a report of a man firing a gun at the intersection of Anaheim Street and Magnolia Avenue. They spotted a man who fit the description, Eaton said.  “He was walking along the sidewalk,” he said.

After being shot, he was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man, who was in his 30s, has not been identified. His gun was recovered by police.

Authorities later learned that the man had been shooting at a particular car that fled the scene, Eaton said. They are looking for the vehicle and its driver.

The shooting will be investigated by the Police Department and the L.A. County district attorney’s office, Eaton said.

He said he did not know if the man had his gun drawn when he was shot, how many times he was hit or how many times the officers fired.
