Two men who allegedly stole beer -- twice -- from a gas station over the weekend and then partied in a Santa Ana hotel room were arrested, but only after trying unsuccessfully to escape by scurrying down the outside of the building from the 10th floor, police said.
Police say the two stole beer from a Mobil gas station at about 5:20 p.m. Saturday, then returned about an hour later and stole beer again. The second, time, however, the store clerk followed the men to the Embassy Suites at 1325 E. Dyer Road, authorities said.
When police officers went to the room, the men -- identified as Gabriel Anthony Sauceda, 22, and Chad Alexander Walker, 20 -- fled onto the balcony and started going down the building "by jumping from balcony to balcony," according to a news release from the Santa Ana Police Department. While fleeing, one of the men broke his leg in several places, police said.
Officers tracked the men's movements and arrested them without major incident, police said.
