A man who was injured trying to catch a woman who jumped 50 feet from a ledge at the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday -- probably saving her life -- is a 61-year-old former Marine, officials said.
The woman, who jumped from a third-floor seating area onto a second-floor concourse about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, was hospitalized in intensive care Sunday night, said Alameda County Sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson. As of Monday morning, she was in critical condition, Nelson told NBC San Francisco.
The ex-Marine who broke her fall was seriously injured, Nelson said.
The names of the man and woman have not been released.
As fans filed out of the stadium after the Raiders' loss to the Tennessee Titans, the ex-Marine and a friend looked up and saw the woman preparing to jump. They tried to talk her out of jumping, but she did anyway, Nelson said.
Had the man not been there to break her fall, the woman would have died, officials said.
"Without him doing that, there's no question what would have happened," Nelson said.
