Solano County brush fire shrouds Bay Area in heavy smoke

Share

OAKLAND -- A massive grass fire Friday near California 12 in Solano County was blowing a pall of smoke over the Bay Area, prompting calls to local fire departments from worried residents.

The 8-alarm fire in the Suisun City area had spread to 500 acres by Friday afternoon and was only 10% contained. It had burned one structure. Dixon Fire Chief Aaron McAlister told KTVU that it was either a residence or a ranch outbuilding.

The fire was reported to the California Highway Patrol shortly after noon. By 2 p.m., high Bay Area winds and low pressure had pushed heavy smoke as far as Oakland, about 40 miles to the southwest.

Oakland and Berkeley firefighters surveyed the East Bay hills in search of another source but determined the smoke was coming from Solano County, according to dispatchers.
