Two California Highway Patrol officers died early Monday morning after crashing on the 99 Freeway south of Fresno, officials said.

Both officers were in the same car as they were responding to a crash on the freeway when they were involved in their own collision around 6 a.m., said CHP Officer Axel Reyes. The wreck occurred on the southbound 99 Freeway north of Sierra Street near Kingsburg, he said.

“It looks like they struck a pole,” Reyes said.

It’s unclear which crash the officers were initially responding to, but Reyes said it appears that it involved at least two vehicles.

How the officers crashed into the pole was also unclear, Reyes said, adding that the investigation remained ongoing.

Traffic delays in the area were likely.
