Denver police: Woman shot her three kids, then committed suicide

A Denver woman shot her three children before committing suicide, police confirmed Thursday.

When police responded to a 911 call at her home Wednesday morning, they found a bloody scene, which they eventually classified as a murder-suicide, police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez told the Los Angeles Times.

Before turning the gun on herself, 22-year-old Mayra Perez fatally shot her daughter, Nevaeh Morales, and her son, Erick Perez, and critically injured her youngest daughter, Isabel Perez, police said. All the children were younger than 7, authorities said.

In a news conference Thursday at Denver Health Medical Center, where Isabel remained in critical condition, Perez’s brother Tony Nuñez gave an emotional statement.

“Being the brother of the person who caused this tragedy, I wish I could say or express in words a ‘sorry,’ ” Nuñez said. “But what’s done is done. Whatever reason drove her to this, it’s going to be in God’s hands. He will be the judge of her.”

For now, he said, his focus is on Isabel -- whom pediatric intensive care doctor Claudia Kunrath said was in a “deep coma.”

“Isabel is in critically ill condition,” Kunrath said. “We’re working with our surgeons to keep her supported.”

The family set up a Wells Fargo fund in Isabel Perez’s name to help cover medical expenses.
